I’ve always believed that business is personal. Maybe that’s because my journey into entrepreneurship didn’t begin with a silver spoon, it started in survival mode.
I grew up as an orphan, raised in some pretty tough environments. From a young age, I had to figure things out for myself. Resilience wasn’t a concept, it was a necessity. Empathy, grit, and self-reliance became my greatest assets.
I didn’t have a safety net. What I had was curiosity, determination, and a deep desire to create a better life and to help others do the same. That raw, lived experience shaped everything I’ve done since.
Fast forward a few decades, and I’m honoured to be recognised as Australia’s #1 small business author, with 14 bestselling books sold in over 65 countries. I’ve worked with thousands of entrepreneurs, authors, and thought leaders around the world helping them build businesses that are successful, sustainable, and deeply meaningful.
Today, I wear a few hats: entrepreneurial futurist, keynote speaker, mentor, and storyteller. I help people future-proof their businesses, communicate with heart and impact, and position themselves as credible, unique, and highly valuable in an increasingly noisy world. I’m known for my straight-talking style, big-hearted honesty, and for sharing everything I’ve learned from decades in the trenches.
My passion is simple but powerful: I want entrepreneurs to be bigger. Not just in business, but in how they think, how they lead, how they contribute, and how they show up in the world.
I’ve spoken on countless stages in over 25 countries, coached more than 1,000 authors from idea to published book, and helped entrepreneurs and business leaders adapt, evolve, and stay critically relevant in a fast-changing world. Whether through my Speaker School, Author Academy, books, or mentoring, my mission remains the same: to help people become unforgettable, future-ready, and wildly impactful.
These days, I call Hobart home. It’s where I write, think deeply, breathe clean air, go fly fishing in crystal-clear rivers, and chase the occasional wombat, because life’s too short not to find joy in the simple things.
I live by one philosophy:
“Someone has to be the most expensive why not make it you? But if you’re going to be the most expensive, you have to be the best.”
If this all resonates with you, we’re going to get along just fine.
I grew up as an orphan and like many children in the same position, this lead to a less than perfect start to life. This is the reason I accepted an invitation to become an Ambassador for the Abused Child Trust (ACT for Kids). Act for Kids has one main aim - to stop all forms of child abuse. They are an incredibly dedicated group, who have to deal with some very ugly situations. They never lose track of the value of each and every child.
Sadly I understand that people can be pretty terrible to each other, but I simply can't understand people being cruel to animals, especially those we are charged to care for and protect. I strongly support the RSPCA in an ongoing capacity and I have also made a point of providing for them in my will. Why did I tell you this? Because I would love you to do the same.
Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary. On a recent trip to Cradle Mountain in Tasmania I fell in love with wombats. There had been a huge blizzard, leaving the landscape covered with snow, except for lots of brown and grey balls casually digging holes and looking for grass. On doing a little research I came across Sleepy Burrows Wombat Sanctuary in NSW - and I was very moved by the work they do to help rehabilitate and relocate injured and abandoned wombats (sadly there are many). Anyone this passionate about helping wombats in need, should be supported - so I do. And I encourage you to do the same. Check out the Sleepy Burrows website - the videos are beautiful.
When I was a teenager someone very close to me died from cancer. I saw how her life was extended through regular blood transfusions, and each extra day was very precious. I started donating blood at the same time and have done so for 30 years. In recent times I have started to donate plasma as often as I can. Every donation can save up to 6 lives. If that is not the absolute best way to contribute to others, I don't know what is. If you are afraid of needles, don't be a baby! It doesn't hurt and you get a biscuit and a glass of orange juice as well. Awesome.
When I was a young boy, and my life was challenging to say the least, I remember befriending a local Salvation Army Officer. He looked out for me, made sure I was OK and protected me from some less than savoury people who actively sought out troubled children. I have never forgotten this man's kindness. Over the years I have actively helped the Salvation Army with fundraising and promotional activities. Sure, they have had some hard times in the press, and some members who did pretty bad things in the past, but every single member of the Salvos that I have met or worked with have been extraordinary individuals in every way.
