So all of a sudden you have some spare time on your hands…

There is no doubt that there are many business owners who are going to find that all of a sudden things have got a bit quiet and suddenly, they have more time on their hands than they have had for years. For those business owners who have been absolutely frantic for as long as they can remember, having spare time is a new and somewhat strange feeling that can be a little scary and hard to manage at first. But work with it and you might just start to enjoy it.

First things first, just because it may have got a bit quieter right now it certainly doesn’t mean that the world is coming to an end. So please don’t leap to that conclusion and waste your new found time chewing your nails in a constant state of terror.

Secondly, if you have been working crazy hours, burning yourself out for years, now is the perfect time to put your feet up and take it a bit easier. Perhaps you will find some time to go the gym a bit more often, or read a few more books, or take a holiday or finally get to the in pile on your desk and finish it once and for all. In other words it is a great time to do stuff just for you.

We all know that these are turbulent times in the business world, but it will play out and it will get back to some kind of normality. Times like now give us all the chance to recharge our batteries, refocus on the priorities in our life, think about where we are going and what we want to achieve and also get us prepared for when business picks up and starts to get frantic again. Rest assured that this time will come and then we will be back to living that out of control existence that so many business owners have become accustomed to.

In other words we have a great opportunity on our hands and that opportunity is to make it all about us for a little while. Don’t sit around worrying about what may be, instead make a list of all the things you want to do but haven’t been able to get around to and start ticking them off. Spend some time spoiling yourself and taking time out just to nurture your soul. It will really pay off in the long run and it will put you in the right frame of mind, ready to gear up as the craziness begins again.

As I always say, creating a successful business is a marathon – not a sprint. Knowing when to coast and when to charge is the difference between first and second place. Good luck with taking it easy. And even if you are still ridiculously busy – take it easy anyway. Life is too short to work too much.
